With Congress in recess until after the election, I am excited to be back home on the campaign trial for the next month. I look forward to seeing you all at the many events planned in the upcoming month and hearing your thoughts on the important issues facing our country.

There have been a few exciting developments at Moore for Congress over the last week. First, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Political Action Committee announced their endorsement of my re-election campaign. I’m proud and honored to have their continued support. Second, Moore for Congress began airing our first commercial. You can see this commercial on broadcast channels across the metro area or at my website.

I’m excited to be back, but I have a busy month of campaigning ahead of me, including preparations for next week’s debate. I invite all of you to come out to Johnson County Community College on Tuesday, October 10th, at 7 p.m., for the debate. Moore for Congress is having a rally outside the Carlsen Center at 5:30 p.m., so get there early and reserve your spot for this crowded event.

Over the last week, I have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support and condolences for my family during this difficult time. My Dad was indeed an inspiration, not just to me, but to the many people whose lives he touched during his long life.

This week, I'm back in Washington, D.C., for what will most likely be the last week Congress is in session before the election. Our country is facing many important issues and we have much to do. I'm saddened that the House Leadership has chosen to pursue a divisive, political agenda in the weeks leading up to the election rather than promoting unity and working to find real solutions to our very real problems.

November 7th is a chance for you to embrace an independent, moderate voice. I've always put my country before my party and I'd be honored to have your vote. I urge everyone to request an advance voting ballot so that you can vote from the comfort of home. Advance voting ballots will be mailed approximately twenty days before the election, so you'll have plenty of time to complete and return it. In addition, voting by mail is the only way to ensure a paper trail for your vote.

If you aren't registered to vote, or need to re-register because you've moved since the last election, the last day to do so before the November election is October 23. You can find all the forms you need to register to vote and request an advance voting ballot at the Kansas Secretary of State's office.

If you are registered and have requested your advance voting ballot, please take a moment to be sure that your circle of friends, relatives, and co-workers are registered and have considered an advance voting ballot.

If we are not held in Washington D.C. for votes this weekend, I have a busy schedule that includes the Korean War Veterans Memorial Dedication, the Overland Park Fall Festival Parade, the KCK NAACP Banquet, and a birthday party for one of my granddaughters. I look forward to seeing you on the campaign trail in the last five weeks before the election!

Warner Moore : 1920-2006

It is with sadness that I write today.

Warner Moore, Congressman Dennis Moore’s father, passed away in Andover, KS, early Sunday morning, September 17, 2006. Warner Moore was a respected and accomplished lawyer who instilled in Dennis his commitment to public service. Warner was elected and served as Sedgwick County attorney three times from 1953-1959. He served as Democratic County Chairman in Sedgwick County from 1966-1971 and 1978-82. Tough, but kind-hearted, Warner provided countless hours of pro bono work and gave generously to numerous candidates and causes.

He leaves behind his wife Maxine, two sons, Dennis and Randy, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Please keep the Moore family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. An online Guest Book for Warner Moore is being maintained by the Wichita Eagle.

Yesterday, five years after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, was a time to honor those whose lives were lost, as well as their families and the brave men and women who have dedicated their lives to protecting our people and our country. As always, we hold them in our thoughts and prayers.

I had the opportunity to speak to a group of students from Shawnee Mission South’s Center for International Studies about my memories of 9-11 and how those events changed our nation. I was proud to see this group of student’s dedication to international understanding. I share with them my belief that the United States must reach out to the international community if we hope to stop the spread of terrorism.

We must work together to ensure that we live in a world that is safe and secure.

2006 Intern Program

We are still on the lookout for Moore for Congress interns here at our Lenexa campaign headquarters. If you are interested in learning the “nuts and bolts” of political campaigning in a race of national importance, send me your resume today. It is still possible to get college credit for your internship.

Potential interns should be motivated, detail-oriented, computer savvy, willing to learn new skills and have reliable transportation. As an intern you will assist the Field Director with mailings, database management, event planning and other tasks. Interns also process correspondence to the campaign, assist with opposition research and attend public political events. There is also an opening for an intern with our finance department. If you are good with numbers and want to learn about campaign finance in a race that will raise and spend over $2 million, send Clay your resume and cover letter.

Intern positions are unpaid, but successful completion of an internship with Moore for Congress will put you in a prime position for future paid work on Democratic campaigns in Kansas. If you are interested, please email me with your resume and cover letter.

After a great month seeing all of you at various community events and spending time with my family, I am heading back to Washington, D.C. I tell people that being a member of Congress is both the most frustrating and rewarding job I've ever had.

It is frustrating to see the lack of results coming from our nation's capital; this Congress has worked fewer days and accomplished less than any Congress in recent history. There are a lot of big issues facing the nation and I get tired of seeing partisan squabbles and the current House leadership allowing the gridlock to continue. Kansas families, and all of America, deserve better.

What is incredibly rewarding is representing the great people of Kansas, who I come home and visit nearly every weekend, and the things I've been able to accomplish, like increasing the death gratuity for soldiers killed in action and ensuring their R&R travels costs are covered.

I'll be home this Friday and I hope to see some of you at events over the weekend!

This Saturday was a good example of an average day for me during campaign season. Hopefully, it will give you some insight as to what life is like on the campaign trail.

In the morning, I met a large group of supporters in Bonner Springs to walk in the Tiblow Days Parade. Despite the rain we had great turnout. After the parade, I had a campaign meeting at Moore for Congress headquarters over lunch, and then my wife, Stephene, and I went to the Maternal and Child Health Coalition Health Fair in KCK. It is a wonderful event with free health screenings, clothing, personal care products and donated food for mothers and children.

Then, it was off to a series of campaign house parties in Overland Park and Mission Hills. House parties are opportunities for me to visit with constituents in a relaxed setting and hear their thoughts about current events. Just this month we have had four house parties across the district, with many more to come.

Saturday evening I had a fundraiser called "Moore for our Kids" in Shawnee. A great group of public school teachers and parents hold this event annually to show their support for me and for strong public education. Thanks to everyone who attended.

Although it was a long day, Saturday gave me numerous opportunities to speak with my constituents and listen to their concerns. As August District Work period draws to a close, I want to let you know that it has been an honor to visit with so many of you while I've been home. I truly value district work periods and weekends when I get to come home to Kansas to see my family (especially my grandkids) and spend time with all of you!

During the past two weeks I have been in the Third District while Congress is on recess. While home I’ve attended various community events, including the Johnson County Fair Parade in Gardner. I’d like to thank all of my supporters who came out and walked with us.

Last Tuesday, I hosted an Energy Forum at the KU Edwards Campus. The forum brought together representatives from energy related government offices and businesses. I was delighted to take part in a discussion of our country’s energy crisis and the need for a comprehensive energy policy.

On Friday, I joined Gov. Sebelius at the GM Fairfax plant in Kansas City, Kansas, for the launch of the new Saturn Aura. It is a great car assembled by a great group of hard working men and women. I’m sure it will be a great success!

This weekend I had a packed schedule, which included the opening of the Kansas Democratic Party’s new Douglas County office. I was pleased to see all of the energetic volunteers and supporters gathered there. With such enthusiasm and dedication we can look forward to a very exciting campaign season!
