September 8, 2005 - MOORE TO HONOR SECOND GRADE STUDENTS FOR READING EXCELLENCE

(OVERLAND PARK, KS) – Congressman Dennis Moore (Third District - Kansas) will award S.T.A.R. reading certificates to second grade students who completed his program to help children build a strong foundation and commitment to learning. The award ceremonies will take place in Spring Hill, Leawood, Olathe and Kansas City, Kan.

“The S.T.A.R. program is designed to increase interest and excitement in reading outside of a formal classroom environment by encouraging parents, grandparents, and older siblings to take the time to read with children at home,” Moore said.

S.T.A.R., which stands for Summer Time Ace Reading Program, challenged students to read at least 12 books at home over summer vacation. Children who met the goal will be publicly recognized with a certificate and button at ceremonies throughout the Third District of Kansas. Awards will be mailed to students who are unable to attend the ceremonies. The schedule of ceremonies appears below. Moore will speak briefly at each ceremony, present awards and conclude by playing his guitar.
